Science Learning

Check out the mess we managed to make in Room 17 on Thursday. We were making oobleck and hypothesising about what state of matter it could be categorised as. We discovered it fluctuated between being a liquid and solid depending on the amount of pressure (force) that was applied? But what is the scientific term for this? Can these substances be brought back to their original form?

Team 4 Masterchef

Congratulations to Josie on organising an extravaganza!!! There were parts of the challenge where I was biting my fingernails (Rm 17 had to make their custard again). Nevertheless the team did not give up to the bitter end and we came out victorious. Thanks to Rooms 15 and 16 for being outstanding challengers. The judges had a tough job they informed us as all of the trifles had outstanding parts to it. Can't wait until next years event.

Science Learning

This term we are focussing on science experiments and investigations. Some experiments that will help us with our learning include states of matter, fizzing and foaming, oozing and sliming. Towards the end of the term, we will be having a Team 4 and 4 science fair for our parents and whanau to come and see all the amazing learning we have been involved with.
BIG IDEA – We are learning that change can be permanent or reversible.
SUBSIDIARY – Investigating the physical properties of a material will not result in that material being changed to another substance. Physical properties include smell, colour, texture and strength.
SUBSIDIARY – Substances have chemical properties that can be described and used to group them. When a chemical change takes place, new substances are formed
Check out our investigations from Thursday with chemical reactions. We had a range of substances to combine to predict what could potentially react with another substance.

Rezpect Dance Academy

Daniel, Jacob, Azaryia and Dre were lucky to attend the auditions held in Hastings during the holidays. They had two dances to learn and they were not easy. One involved a lot of faaaaast arm/hand work that needed a lot of coordination. This Academy performed at Matariki this year and were a big hit with the audience. Check out their website - they mentioned the 'out of town,' talent to be very good.

French

We have been extremely lucky to have our talented French tutor - Kate O'Brien coming into Team 4 classes for our French sessions. We have set about mastering some basic vocabulary, had a visit from Lucy (a real French person), learnt to count to ten, and started some research into areas of interest. In this short clip you will see Cody, Matthew, Rory and Ethan engaging in conversation. Rather impressive don't you think? Enjoy your holidays everyone and see you back in two weeks time.

DARE - Constable Kendrick

Dare has been happening in Team 4 for the last three
weeks of the term. Constable Kendrick has been visiting Rooms 15, 16 and 17
most days teaching the students about substances they may encounter when they
are older. Providing all of the facts and information has been the main part of
her sessions, looking at alcohol and drugs in particular. The students have
been interactive with the sessions having to read packets and labels as well as
make choices based on the information provided. It is hoped later on in life
that the young adults she has been working with will be well informed and able
to make positive decisions that keep them healthy and well.

Book Character Day

Congratulations to Paula and Micah for organising a fantastic day - we all had lots of fun. $284 was raised and over one hundred cans of food. The Salvation Army called in at lunch time to collect the goodies and were very grateful for everyone getting in and supporting this very worthy cause. Be sure to check out some great snaps of the characters that turned out on Friday - there were all sorts!!!
